Dr. Meinzen-Dick is a Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Environment and Production Technology at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). IFPRI is one of 15 food and environmental research organizations known as the Future Harvest centers. The centers, located around the world, conduct research in partnership with farmers, scientists, and policymakers to help alleviate poverty and increase food security while protecting the natural resource base. Dr. Meinzen-Dick's research deals with water resource management, property rights, and collective action. Much of her field work has been conducted in South Asia and Southern Africa.

Professor Baruah specializes in the areas of Gender and development; women and political economy; globalization and labour; gender and economic policy; democratic decentralization; women and political participation; urbanization; urban poverty; women and urban environments, informal sector economy and livelihoods; informal human settlements; land and housing rights; water and sanitation; microfinance. She is also involved in topics dealing with qualitative and quantitative development research methodologies; feminist research methodology; case studies; poverty alleviation monitoring and evaluation tools, indicators, benchmarks; gender mainstreaming. Professor Baruah has conducted various research projects with the Association for Women's Rights in Development, the Centre for Sustainable Development, and the University of Toronto.
